Senior School - Years 10/11/12

Year 10
The tenth year of schooling is of great importance, as students have moved from Middle Schooling into their Senior Years where the foundation preparation for the SACE begins. Subject selection at this level, therefore, is a process that requires careful consideration.

The 2007 year 10 course is being offered as 24 one term (10 week) module units to allow students the greatest possible choice in line with their interests and aspirations.

The Curriculum is divided into eight broad areas of learning which identify significant learning outcomes for all students. The areas of study are:

• The Arts
• Mathematics
• English
• Science
• Health & Physical Education
• Studies of Society & Environment
• Languages other than English
• Design and Technology.

Students will undertake at least 1 SACE semester unit (two 10 week – one term modules) at Year 10 level. These two modules constitute the WALE (Work & Life Education) course. Students successfully undertaking Specialist Sport will also gain a number of additional SACE Stage 1 units, as will students successfully studying Food Preparation.

Year 10 Course Overview
Year 10 subjects are arranged in the eight curriculum areas and are offered as 10 week or one term module units. Students must choose 24 module units according to the following pattern:

16 COMPULSORY MODULE UNITS   4 English
    4 Mathematics
    4 Science
    2 Society and Environment
    2 Work and Life Education
(WALE) – Integrated Studies

For each of the above compulsory learning areas there is choice available from those modules. (see Handbook for more detail)

A Youth Opportunities program is also made available to year 10 students to assist in developing their interpersonal and life skills.

Years 11-12
The senior years of high school are especially important as students make the transition from compulsory education with a broad general program, to a post-compulsory education of more specialised studies.
Students are able to focus on clear pathways through Individual Learning Plans, setting achievable goals, which are revisited periodically.

The South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) which was introduced in 1992 in secondary schools, provides the framework for all senior students.

With the SACE, students can undertake a wide range of subjects that place varying academic demands upon them. While all students conform to the same basic curriculum pattern, it is possible to devise many combinations of the subjects offered at Wirreanda High School to provide the most suitable and challenging course of senior secondary study for each student.

Students will have opportunities at Year 10 to undertake some SACE Stage I units, students in Year 11 will study up to 12 semester units at Stage I and most will study five full-year subjects at Stage 2 (Year 12). Students also have the opportunity to take part in Work Experience programs at Years 10 and 11 and Work Placements within VET programs.

A Flexible Pathways Program is available with its aim to assist students who require additional support and flexibility in their senior schooling. This includes school based Apprenticeships, Traineeships and a range of vocational short courses.

The following section outlines the aims and requirements of the SACE.

THE AIMS OF SACE

The South Australian Certificate of Education has been introduced to:

  • Encourage the successful completion of secondary education
  • Foster students’ acquisition of the skills and knowledge necessary for successful participation in contemporary Australian society for the full range of senior secondary students and to the highest level possible
  • Signify students’ preparedness to enter post-school studies and employment
  • Be a certificate that is valued by the community and by those to whom it has been awarded

The main aim of the SACE curriculum has been designed to advance particular educational ends, and to provide access to, and participation in, an appropriate range of studies for all students.

The SACE incorporates learning designed to develop:

  • Communication and language skills
  • Numeracy skills
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Social skills
  • Technological skills
  • Information processing skills
    The ability to reason
  • The ability to exercise initiative
  • An understanding of the world of work within the Australian and international context.

Emphasis will also be placed upon learning that will lead students to gain an appreciation of the aesthetic aspects of human experience and the environmental issues that affect the well being of humanity.

2007 VET PROGRAMS

The Southern Vocational College is part of the Southern Alliance for Innovation and Learning (SAIL) and represents a collaborative educational partnership between, Australian Science and Maths School, Aberfoyle Park High School, Christies Beach High School, Hallett Cove School, Hamilton Secondary College, Morphett Vale High School, Reynella East High School and Wirreanda High School.

In 2007, the Southern Vocational College is continuing to offer the following VET programs across the schools. Students travel between the schools that deliver the particular program while staying enrolled at their home school. These programs will provide students with the opportunity to develop their understanding of working in an industry area while still at school.

To become enrolled in one of the listed programs, students will need to complete a “Notification of Intention to Enrol” form which is available from the Vocational Education Coordinator at your home school. For some of the programs there will be a selection process undertaken to ensure students will be successful in the programs. More information about the programs will be sent to students when a “Notification of Intention to Enrol” form is received and the enrolment process is completed.

WHAT IS VET?

VET refers to national vocational qualifications that are endorsed by industry. VET courses deliver industry-endorsed units of competency from nationally endorsed training packages. VET qualifications are recognised across Australia. Studying a VET program while still at school can:
• Provide you with a head start in your chosen career.
• Make your senior school studies more relevant and interesting.
• Enable you to work towards completing your SACE as well as gaining a training qualification.
• Enable you to combine your school studies with part-time or casual employment.
• Provide opportunities to learn “on the job” while undertaking work placement.
