Wirreanda High School offers a broad comprehensive curriculum for all
students in the Middle Years, leading to increased specialisation as students
move through the Senior School.
The Middle School aims to meet the
learning needs of young adolescents and to provide the best foundation
for lifelong learning. The emphasis is on sub-school organization, a team
approach to student learning with an emphasis on limiting class sizes.
Teams of teachers work collaboratively to plan, program and deliver varied
teaching and assessment methodologies. An inclusive and dynamic program
that fosters an enthusiasm for learning is what we aim for.
Identification of students with
special needs occurs on entering Year 8 and continues throughout students time
at Wirreanda High School. We identify students who require extra support
(NEP), and those who will benefit from extension and enrichment
programs (SHIP).
The Senior School (10-12)
aims to develop skills, knowledge, attitudes and values which will
enable students to seek challenges and continue to learn beyond schooling.
The Year 10 curriculum moves towards
the senior school model, providing the breadth of choice available to
senior students. Students have the opportunity to undertake SACE Stage
1 units and to explore career pathway planning with structured work
experience in the last two weeks of the year.
Studies in Years 11 & 12
are based on the SACE, which requires a pattern of study to adhere
to. Flexibility has been built into the curriculum through community
studies and our focus on Vocational and Educational Training
(VET). Wirreanda High School has a long tradition of providing vocational
pathways, with the school having agreements with several TAFE Institutes & other
Registered Training Organisations that allows us to offer nationally
recognised industry competencies to senior students. VET enables
our students to explore vocational pathways, become more motivated at
school as the curriculum becomes more relevant to them and also successfully
achieve the SACE.
We are a Specialist Sport Focus School
offering a range of sports including football, netball, basketball, soccer,
cricket, volleyball, surfing and aerobic dance. Students who have a high
level of interest and ability are able to apply for entry into the Specialist
Sport Course (SSC). Entry is through selection based on a set of criteria.
Wirreanda coordinates the Southern Vales Specialist Physical Education
and Sport Program.
